Splash. Splash. Flutter. Up it goes flying only to come once more to its resting place. This time bringing friends to blithely join in the fray. The water flew and the birds danced from stone to stone. Birds playing is also a routine I’ve seen outside the window of our birdbath. Their obvious enjoyment of a very needed thing was one that was as common as breathing and it brought to them to a place of safety. Birds will not bathe nor play unless they feel safe.

Available in the Gallery + Shop in prints as well as canvases.

Play only happens when one feels safe.

The little birds skipped, hopped, and twittered their songs. Once in a while they’d pause and looked straight at me. I’d freeze hardly daring to move. They’re lovely little things- however flighty as all get out. Slow in movement and quick on the shutter release a photographer must be. For example, patient and yet quick as lightening to get them in action.

They freeze for a second pretending not to notice I was there. After painful minutes they’d resume playing and their songs. These sparrows seem to delight in the most simplest things. Birds playing is far better enjoyed than a movie as they chase, twitter, and splash keeping entertainment and lightheartedness very much active.

Play inspires creativity and activity

Such as agility and quickness came from their splashing in the river. In their hopping, they are building up strength. In their singing ,they are building a community by communication. By chasing they learn to weather the wind and train to their advantage.

Play is an often underestimated form of growth.
